Governance within a multi-academy trust

Begbrook Primary Academy is part of the Cabot Learning Federation, a multi-academy trust that is responsible for a number of academies across Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset.  Governance for a multi-academy trust operates at two levels.  At trust level, there is a Board of Directors.  The directors are accountable to the Department for Education and external government agencies, including the Charity Commission, for the quality of the education the trust provides and the effective use of the associated academy funding. They are required to have systems in place through which they can assure themselves of quality, financial probity, safety and good practice. The Board is provided assurance on a number of these areas through various sub-committees, as shown in the diagram below. Academy Council

At a local level, each academy has an Academy Council comprising of up to 13 Academy Councillors.  Academy Councils are responsible for holding Principals and their leadership teams to account for the quality and effectiveness of the academic experience of the students under their care with the aim of securing effective school improvement.  They do this through monitoring performance against an annual academy improvement plan, through monitoring risks and responses to risks, and by overseeing systems and processes for the safeguarding of children and the health, safety and wellbeing of academy staff.

I’m pleased to be Chair of Begbrook Primary Academy Council.  I have been an Academy Councillor since May 2018 and I share the ambition for Begbrook to be recognised as an outstanding school.   I have 19 years’ experience working in the public sector in a number of finance, policy and project management roles.  I use my experience and enthusiasm to provide the right level of support and challenge to help our children reach their full potential and enjoy their school experience.

TONY MOONEY:  I have always been actively involved in school life, helping with reading, school trips, PTFA and talks to early year’s children. I want all Begbrook pupils to have the best start in life, to enjoy going to school, make positive friendships and gain the knowledge and skills to help them thrive. I hope to make a positive contribution to the school.  I am supporting the Principal and his team to take the school from being ‘good’ to ‘outstanding’, by drawing on my experience and constructively challenging the senior leadership team. Begbrook is a great school, has a great staff team, fabulous kids and parents and I am doing my part in helping it grow from strength to strength.

SHASHI MCGREGOR: I retired from Bristol Children’s Services five years ago. During my 35 years in Education I have worked across most of the Education Sectors from Infant and Nursery through to Secondary and 10 years in FE at the City of Bristol College. On retirement I was an employed consultant for Bristol Children and Young People Service, advising and supporting the delivery of the Foundation Stage in East Bristol. As a BPA Councillor I have had responsibility to support the Nursery and Reception units. Currently, I am the designated councillor for the Academy Improvement Plan 2017/18 Priority four, Staff Well-being and Workload. I am a member of an Ethnic Minority. My first language is Punjabi and so have worked extensively in Education to support learning and development of black and Asian children. As a a BPA Councillor, my aim is to ensure the best possible teaching and learning for all of our children.

I have recently joined the governing body as the representative of the support staff at Begbrook. Support staff include classroom assistants, dinner staff, office workers, site controllers and wrap-around care play leaders. I have had four children involved at Begbrook, three of whom are still there. I enjoy learning about the inner workings of the school and contributing to the safe and smooth running.

My children are 4 and 6 and started at Begbrook in nursery. I’m very impressed with the school and all of the support, teaching and management staff. I’ve been a doctor for 12 years, 7 of those as a GP in Bristol. I spend my professional life dealing particularly with mental health, as well as safeguarding, and social inclusion. I have a professional and personal interest in physical, mental health (resilience) and learning disabilities. I will be objective and committed and bring my skills and enthusiasm to the role.

Having recently left academia, I completed my PhD in Neuropsychiatric Medicine where I worked with families of young people with a rare genetic syndrome. I specialised in measuring and analysing sleep problems and the relationship to mental health problems in young children. These experiences allowed me to interact with a diversity of families across the UK and begin to learn more about some of the obstacles in learning and education to these young people.

Throughout my academic career, I have worked in social mobility and widening access alongside my studies, to advocate for the right to access education regardless of who you are or perceived to be. From a working-class background and being the first in my family to attend university, I personally recognise the potential barriers to learning. Therefore, I am passionate about ensuring that all children should be supported, inspired and encouraged to reach their full potential in and out of school.

Being part of the Begbrook Councillor team means I can ensure that the students have an equal and effective education. I am honoured to have a role in the Begbrook Councillor team to ensure all children of Begbrook Primary have the potential for greatness and fulfilment at school.
