Term 4, Week 2 – Child on Child Harm

Term 4, Week 2 - Child on Child Harm

Child on Child Harm

This week, we have been talking to children about child on child harm – what is it, what we do to try and prevent it from happening at Begbrook and what we do to manage it on the few unfortunate occasions that is does happen.

In Monday’s assembly, daily review sessions and Friday’s PSHE lesson, we shared the following definition of Child on Child Harm with children:

Child on child harm, also known as child on child abuse, is when a child or children harm another child or children. Child on child harm can happen both inside and outside of school as well as online. Child on child harm can be physical, verbal, sexual, emotional or via the internet. (Please note this definition was shared with different year groups in an age appropriate way).

Our Approach to Managing Child on Child Harm at BPA

In term 3, we worked with children and staff to create our approach to managing Child on Child Harm at Begbrook. This included what we do to PREVENT Child on Child Harm from happening as well as how we respond to Child on Child Harm when it has happened. Following feedback from children and staff, we created the following approach:

To prevent child on child harm from happening at our school we have…

  • Our Safeguarding Team
  • Our Gem Powers
  • Our 3 School Rules
  • Our Class Chatterboxes
  • Our Safeguarding Weekly Themes

When child on child harm does happen we:

  • Talk about what happened
  • Talk about how each person was feeling
  • Think about what we can do differently next time
  • Agree how to resolve the incident
  • Fix what has happened – apologise and/or complete a reflection as appropriate

To help us remember our approach to managing Child on Child Harm, we have created a poster which is displayed around our school:
