Term 4, Week 4 - Domestic Abuse

Domestic Abuse

This week we will be talking to children about domestic abuse – what it is and what they can do if they are worried about it.

In daily reviews and Friday’s safeguarding session, we will be sharing the following information with children:

  • What is Domestic Abuse?
    • Domestic abuse is sometimes called ‘domestic violence’ and it can involve an adult threatening, bullying or hurting another adult in their family or who they’re in a relationship with.

  • Types of Domestic Abuse:
    • There are different types of domestic abuse. A bit like child on child harm, domestic abuse can be physical, verbal, emotional, sexual (UKS2 only) and online.
    • Below are some examples of domestic abuse:
      • Kicking, hitting, punching
      • Saying unkind things
      • Not letting someone having money or stopping them from going to work to earn money (controlling finances)
      • Telling someone where they can go and what they have to wear (controlling behaviour)
      • Not letting someone leave the house
      • Threatening to hurt someone, a pet or someone else in their family

  • It is normal for adults to disagree and be a bit grumpy with each other – everyone gets frustrated at things – this doesn’t mean it is domestic abuse. Domestic abuse is when one person is intentionally being unkind to the other person in their relationship, or towards another adult in their family.

  • What can you do if you’re worried about Domestic Abuse?
    • If you’re worried about domestic abuse you can:
      • Talk to one of your 5 safe adults
      • Write in your class chatterbox
      • Talk to a member of our safeguarding team (Miss Adams, Miss Allen, Mrs Skade, Miss Counsell, Miss Mowlem or Miss Earle)
      • Call Childline on 0800 1111
