Term 4, Week 3 – Neglect

Term 4, Week 3 - Neglect

Neglect

This week, we talked to the children about what neglect is, and what they can do if they’re worried about it.

What is Neglect?

Every child has the right to be looked after properly. If a child is not getting the important
things they need at home, they could be being neglected.

What is the difference between things we want and things we need?

You might want a new games console, or the latest phone.

You need things like enough to eat and drink, clean clothes, protection from danger.  Your parents or carers should make sure that you have these things.

Things the children told us that they need:

  • clean and warm clothes and shoes that fit and keep us dry
  • food and drink
  • protection from dangerous situations
  • somewhere warm, dry and comfortable to sleep
  • help if we are ill or have been hurt
  • love and care from our parents and carers
  • support with our education
  • medicine if we need it

There could be many reasons why a child is being neglected, their family may be trying their best but may just not have enough money, be struggling with their physical or mental health.  Children also shouldn’t have to spend lots of time looking after other people in their family without getting any support from an adult.

What our children can do if they are worried they, or someone they know, is being neglected?

  • Speak to one of their 5 safe adults
  • Write a note in their class chatterbox
  • Speak to someone in our safeguarding team
  • Call ChildLine on 0800 1111
