Term 1, Week 8 - Attendance and Punctuality

Attendance and Punctuality

This week we spoke to children about why it’s important to come to school every day and on time.

We explained that coming to school regularly helps everyone feel part of the class, build friendships, and enjoy learning.

We also explained to children that we are here to help if they ever find mornings or getting to school tricky.

In daily reviews we used the following question prompts to talk to children about attendance and punctuality:

EYFS

Why do we come to school each day?

What do we like doing when we come to school?

How does coming to school help us learn and play?

Who helps us at school if we need something?

Who can we talk to if we ever feel sad or worried about coming to school? (e.g. our teacher or another grown-up we trust)

Key message: “We come to school to play, learn, and be with our friends. If we ever feel worried about coming to school, we can tell a grown-up and they will help us.”

KS1

Why is it helpful to arrive at school when the day starts?

Why is it important to come to school every day?

How can we make sure we are ready to learn each morning?

Who can help us if we’re finding it hard to get to school or be on time? (e.g. our teacher, teaching assistant, or a trusted adult in school)

Key message: Being here every day and on time helps us learn more and feel proud of ourselves. If mornings ever feel tricky, we can talk to a grown-up at school — they’re always here to help us.

KS2

What are attendance and punctuality?

Why do they matter for our learning and our future?

How does being late or missing school affect us and others?

What can we do to help ourselves be ready and on time each day?

Who can we talk to if we’re worried about getting to school on time or coming every day? (e.g. our teacher or another trusted adult)

Key message: Good attendance and punctuality show responsibility and help us achieve our goals. If we ever struggle with mornings, we can talk to a trusted adult in school — there’s always someone who will listen and help.
